About the Redwood Natal and Zululand Album (1879–80)
These remarkable photographs form part of the Redwood Natal and Zululand Album, generously provided by Cambridge University Library under a Creative Commons licence (RCS/Y3058A). The album was compiled by Charles Lewis Redwood, a railway and mining engineer based in Durban during 1879, and includes historically significant scenes from the Anglo-Zulu War as well as views of Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
Photographers represented include William Laws Caney, James Lloyd, Benjamin Kisch and J.R. Mee—some of the earliest professionals to document life and conflict in colonial Natal and Zululand. Captions beneath the images are original and may reflect outdated or offensive language of the period.
With thanks to Cambridge University Library for preserving and sharing this important visual archive.
