FOUR WIVES OF KING kaMPANDE as drawn by a British artist who never knew their names.
This wood engraving, published in The Graphic just months after the Anglo-Zulu War, attempts to depict his Zulu wives. Their likenesses are stylised, imagined, perhaps based on second-hand sketches — yet each face suggests individuality, presence and quiet strength.
Who were they really? Behind each pair of eyes lies a life of adaptation, diplomacy, survival — women who navigated two worlds: the Zulu royal court and colonial politics, all while raising children in the shadow of war.
Their names were rarely printed. Their voices rarely heard. But in John Dunn’s world, their names and faces were known.
