Susan Nind-Barrett is a British author, artist and independent publisher whose work brings the people and history of nineteenth-century Zululand vividly to life. After spending three decades living in South Africa, including many years in rural Zululand, she developed a lifelong fascination with the remarkable individuals whose lives shaped the region's history.
Her extensive archival research into the life of John Robert Dunn has resulted in two books: Chief with Ears the Sunlight Shines Through and the expanded historical biography The Crown, the Chief and the King: The Untold Story of Colonial Intrigue in Zululand.
Rather than writing conventional military history, Susan focuses on the lives, relationships and human stories behind the historical record, making complex events accessible to general readers without sacrificing accuracy. When she is not researching or writing, Susan enjoys painting African wildlife and portraits in oils and pastels. She lives in England and continues to research and write about the history of Zululand under her own imprint, Zululand Historical Press.

Gary Richardson is an Australian military historian and battlefield enthusiast with a passion for southern Africa’s 19th-century conflicts. Since 2014, he has visited South Africa over a dozen times, walking every major Zulu War battlefield and visiting the grave of John Dunn.
His knowledge and field research have made him a valued contributor to the The Crown, the Chief and the King.
